August 01 How to be a good tutor / lecturer? This is amazing for me, become a tutor in the college, and it's a big subject (ACCA F7) also. But how to become a good tutor in college? I'm still a newbie. I am not an expereinced lecturer, even i taught tuition before. But that's difference. This is not group study, 3-4 persons to be handled only.... This time i have to face about 60 sth students, by using english to teach, everybody is looking at me. Wow, it really make me nervous!! I have found some characeristics of becoming a good lecturer, i called it as "4Ps". I would like to share with everyone of u. Maybe u will have different opinions, i hope that u don't mind to share with me. 1. Passion Mr Joe had mentioned this word on the class. Eventhough he was saying students must have passion of learning. But well, lecturer must have passion of teaching, is it? Otherwise the lesson will be very boring and inactive. I feel extremely happy when i am teaching (if there is no stress, haha), especially my students understand the topic i teach. That's feeling really great!! I think i am gifted for this chareacteristic. 2. Patience A good lecturer must have patience. My dearest sister, sakana told me so. Some of the students are slow-learners. We can't blame them. Maybe they don't have any accounting basic before, maybe they are too tired...... We can't give them up, can we? What i will do is make sure they understand, if they want to learn. I don't mind to explain again and again, unless their laziness make me angry, hehe. That's the reason why i'm still keeping teaching some a-level students, even it is mot my obligation, but i know they need a hand. 3. Presentation Even a lecturer who has much knowledge, may not be liked by students also. It may because the method of he taught is not good. I love to make things become simple, because johor students love simple things!! They don't like to study a lot of text, normally, or doing research. So i will do some charts and graphs, or interesting examples to explain the theory topics. This really help!! And for the calculation parts, i really happy that i learnt the conso (designed by Mr Joe) & variances (designed by Mr Chow & Mr Hoo). Actually, i had designed my own method of process costing. I feel very happy and excited when my students love my method. I feel a sense of accomplishment. 4. Personality Special personality can make students like you also. Like Mr Jason, i think nobody can be "special" as him. (I hope that he won't be angry on me if he accidentally sees this, haha) He always shout before entering the class, and he can become crazy and talk yellow jokes in the class!! Wow, i could confirm i can't find another lecturer like him. But for me, this is not my style. I prefer getting along with students, finding out their difficulties or problems. I have to know these, so i can develop my teaching, to make them more understand. That's why i always be in the library chatting with friends, looking for comments also. Thanks for Wilson also, he will always correct me when i get wrongs on language while teaching. These 4Ps are important to me, other than the "knowledge". I would try to achieve all of these, because i want to become a good lecturer in future. Comments (6)
